I use the Sharp Zaurus PDA with a Netgear MA701 and Kismet.  (Ok, I use the GUI with Kismet!)  Works great!  Gives all types of info you like such as channel, if wep is on, MAC addresses, if it is an AP or CPE, etc.

There's also a GPS mapping software that someone has developed for this.  I can't figure it out, but maybe someone else on this board can?  (If anyone can figure this out, please tell us!)

Also seems to pick up other 2.4GHz stuff that may not be 802.11b??  Saw this only once.  I assume it wasn't 802.11b because it didn't give a MAC address, ESSID, or other key info.

- SanDisk CF 802.11b Card $ 69.00

Pop the little silver cover off of the CF card and there is a
U.FL connector on the circuit board. At least I think that's
the type it is. I used plyers and ripped their little metal strip
antenna out and soldered a pigtail on to the contacts and
with an RP-SMA connector on the other end I can use the
little rubber ducky antennas from the SB indoor gear, or the
WET11, or hook it up to the 9db omni on my truck.

Software on the iPaq is Windows Mobile 2003 and PocketWarrior.

The purpose of putting this together, at least for me, was to
be able to have something very small that didn't require AC power
that I could take up on a roof and do a site survey. The added bonus
is I get to see every Access Point within close proximity, whether
they are using WEP or not, and their signal strength.

I'll have pictures of what I did on our web site soon.

Anyone have a good easy application I can use to fire up and detect local
wireless AP's?

I find myself more and more needing to find out the ESSID of a public AP and
don't know how. Example, was at a Hilton in NYC that had free Internet
access in the lobby (so you could log on to download porn videos of Paris
Hilton, no doubt) yet the front desk had no clue of what the ESSID was. I
tried "ANY" on my Linksys version one PCMCIA card but found nothing.
