If the drives have no smart support at all, it's probably not worth 
adding them. However there are drives with partial smart support which
do not announce it properly. You could try to add "-T permissive" to the
command line to test it, it should be low risk (no guarantees though).
smartctl then tries to query the smart status despite of the 
failed smart negotiation.
