This is just noise (I'm pretty sure we've always had it.) SmartOS doesn't use bootadm to manage the boot archives the way traditional illumos distributions do.

It should be safe to ignore. I don't know how much work it would be to prevent bootadm from complaining like that.

Are you by any chance using some extra kernel modules that you added to your system separately? That might explain why bootadm thinks it needs to go find the kernel and update the boot archive...
