autoexpansion is irrelevant of whether there is mirroring or not; it would work 
if you had plan RAID0.

I do not know, for I have never tried that particular scenario, but I know of a 
way to test it.Instead of using physical drives, you can use a regular file as 
a disk (created with dd(1)),create a zpool(1M) on it, then enlarge that file 
with dd(1) again, and set zfs autoexpand=onand observe what happens.
