hi all. i have two identical supermicro boxes (5017P-TLN4F) based on this board:

on those i am running smartos from november 2013, with one nic dedicated to
console and one dedicated to vms. all seemed well, until ...
i have created multicore kvm instances in which i installed windows 7
professional. they run fine for a bit, but i eventually lose connection to
them. in fact, i lose connectivity to the smartos boxes themselves. no ssh, no
icmp; i haven't yet been able to login via the console, but a screenshot of the
console shows the joyent/smartos login and no errors.
these are identical boxes, configured separately but running the similar kvm
instances. while i'm gearing up to head out of town to investigate, what
specific steps can i take to determine whether this is a hardware or software
issue?
