I just upgraded to the latest SmartOS release.

Known issue. This is related to the Bardiche flag day:

Basically you need a new QEMU that's built to use the newer libraries:
I did a pair of builds back in April, but they both are missing a new fix from Joyent, and the 1.2.1 build had a bug in the startup script.

So far everything looks except that one of my Spice-VMs won't boot.

I'm assuming it was your only Spice VM. If you have another one that continued to work, that is unexpected and I'd want to know which image was used to create the one(s) that didn't break.

[root@78-e7-d1-8c-9b-9e ~]# vmadm start 74076cf6-71db-4544-bf71-cabf5f77dd11
Unable to start VM 74076cf6-71db-4544-bf71-cabf5f77dd11: timed out
waiting for zone to transition to running

I checked the spice page on the SmartOS wiki and there appear to be no
updates, nor are there any new images listed by imgadm.
My bad for not updating the wiki page... :(
I've updated it today.

I'm not sure why you didn't see the newer images before. They're up on http://datasets.shalman.org/datasets
But it's good thing you didn't grab either of those due to the bug(s).

New images have been built and posted, and they are:
The 1.2.2 image (3ff5a554-e4ed-11e3-820d-33b5e236480b) is the one you should use. The 1.3.2 image (e9b67338-e4ee-11e3-8668-c35a00c0e8dd) contains an experimental patch implementing qxl-4 virtual hardware and I think it still has some bugs, feel free to try it out, but I don't consider it production ready.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Import the 3ff5a554-e4ed-11e3-820d-33b5e236480b image and copy it's contents into the zone root of the existing VM.
Let me know if you need more detail or if it still fails.

May I provide any information that can help those developing spice for smartos?

Not really, though I'm curious what guest OS(es) you're running in your Spice VMs and what your use-case is.
