Joyent already posts their hardware platforms which makes for an
extremely elegant list of components (and firmware revisions!) known to
work well enough with SmartOS that Keith is willing to put them into
production.
There just seem to be a big enough number of people running SmartOS who
have much lower budgets (or who run it on sub $2k home machines) for
whom a list of "the price on this component is tempting, but it's going
to make you miserable, so really, just don't" might save future pain.
