To get a Windows 7 box to see the proper # of cores I had to code the following 
into the VM JSON config file:

 "vcpus": 8,
  "qemu_extra_opts": "-smp cores=4,sockets=2",

But this was direct (SmartOS on the metal, no VMWare) so your mileage may 
vary..
