I can definitely recommend moving to event MPM + php-fpm. The 2014Q1 packages include apache 2.4.9 which supports connecting from apache to php-fpm using sockets which has even better performance.
Regarding 2014Q2, apache 2.4.10 is being released today/tomorrow. Suggest including it if possible.
