This is science, not voodoo. Coming up with theories ("it's something
SmartOS-specific", "it's the NIC driver/HW combo", "it's a layer 3
configuration problem") is well and good, but what the OP really needs
here is not theories but knowledge. The way one obtains knowledge is by
constructing, executing, and interpreting the results of experiments.
Philosophically, it's criminal that we've allowed ourselves to create
such complex and opaque systems that we must treat them as if they were
a part of nature to be probed for understanding, rather than cultural
artifacts that we created of our own minds and should understand
completely, but that's where we are. Unless you have all the code
(including the firmware), all the masks, microscopes, logic probes,
scopes, compilers, and every other kind of software and hardware
equipment to solve the problem purely through inspection, science is the
only way to go. So please, if you're going to propose a theory, offer a
way to test it, too.
It sounds like you're proposing that the OP install FreeBSD to rule out
totally nonfunctional hardware. A reasonable if somewhat heavyweight
approach, especially if the two sets of experiments I proposed show no
packet flow. Suppose that exonerates the HW in terms of basic
functionality; what next? Let's help the OP construct the right set of
experiments.
