I'm a SmartOS newbie who is trying to figure out what might be interfering
with pkgin behavior.
I can "pkgin -y install nano" and everything works as expected. But if I
"pkgin -y install nginx-1.6.0", I see the following:
For it to work with one package but not another is strange, and I'm
wondering if nano is simply cached - you could try removing the file
from /var/db/pkgin/cache, deleting the nano package then trying again
to make sure.
Thank you for the help. I've been periodically checking in on Joyant and
SmartOS for years, but (until now) haven't had any spare x86 gear with
which to experiment.
Removing nano, killing the cache contents, and reinstalling nano works.
Killing the zero-length files for perl-5.20.0nb2.tgz and
nginx-1.6.0.tgz, doesn't change the behavior of later attempts to "pkgin
install nginx"
Now knowing where the cache files live, I was able to wget the .tgz
files from http://pkgsrc.joyent.com/packages/SmartOS/2014Q2/x86_64/All,
move them into /var/db/pkgin/cache/, and pkgin happily accepted them and
installed the contents. At this stage of my life, unless someone tells
me that bad things will result, this is an acceptable workaround.
I now suspect that the problems are at the network layer. My network
path to the rest of the world is littered with blocking, tracking,
limiting, and optimizing devices. Too much of my sysadmin time is
devoted to finding ways to get the broken network to transport the bits
I require, but I'm used to it.
