I've personally had performance issues with samba running inside a zone at three sites. All small companies (3 to 20 users) with SSD zpools, though not enterprise models. File copies via SSD are quick but shared file access via samba is abysmal. In two cases I ended up moving data out if the zones; similar hardware running omnios and shares created via zfs and the embedded cifs service work much faster.
Smartos is not current on these hosts though, and i realize this or a number of other possible configuration choices could be to blame.
