I've personally had performance issues with samba running inside a zone at three sites. All small companies (3 to 20 users) with SSD zpools, though not enterprise models. File copies via SSD are quick but shared file access via samba is abysmal. In two cases I ended up moving data out if the zones; similar hardware running omnios and shares created via zfs and the embedded cifs service work much faster.

I can't say I have seen this with Samba and zones.

The biggest Samba/zone combination I currently have on SmartOS is 6TB of data accessed by about 1000 users and numerous automated processes. A single transfer can easily saturate a 1G link.

The only problem I see is the occasional permissions problem with windows 7 clients. This appears to be a well known Samba issue.
