I disabled sync on the zvol and my disk write test speed jumped up by a
factor of 10.  This confirms what you are saying, but is still a bit
disappointing.  Since I'm mounting this zvol with NFS, it's probably not a
good idea to leave sync disabled despite how attractive the increase disk
speeds might be.

Perhaps I will look into hosting my zvols in a SmartOS smartmachine
configured with Samba that authenticates against my Centos domain
controller.

I do plan to see if a write optimized SSD will help my situation before
move to the Samba smartmachines.
