This was kind of my initial thought as well.  However; after some research,
this is not something isolated to SmartOS.  Vmware ESXi has the same issue
with VM containers on zfs.   This is more of a zfs "Thing" to be aware of.
  I hesitate to call this a problem because the gurus are saying this
behavior is by design.

Bottom line is that KVM performance is going to really suck on many
hardware platforms unless you deal with it as discussed in this tread.
