I've been using that feature for quite a while to set:
-cpu qemu64,+x2apic

We have a pending patch on OpenBSD that drastically improves the OS performance 
under KVM when x2apic is enabled (which is the case by default on qemu-2.X 
iirc, but not with qemu-1.X).
