Hello.

I'm considering using Gluster or something similar on my VMs. I'd like to get the opinion of this community on whether this would be a good choice or if there's anything similar I should also consider.

Hi Sam:

We've used Gluster for many years on Linux systems. Over the last year, we've been migrating all of our old customer GlusterFS setups to other technologies. The big issue in our minds has been lost files. We'd identified this problem in the 2.x releases, submitted bug reports. This was prior to the Red Hat acquisition. Those bug reports had been closed with no action.

These lost files occurred with such regularity that we developed tools specifically designed to build what amounted to a diff between directories of backing store and the gluster file system. See http://download.scalableinformatics.com/gluster/utils/ . Note the date on those tools.

It should be noted that I have seen people report lost files (not in split brain scenarios) as recently as this weekend.

Also, I don't see any Gluster related packages in the repository. Is anyone else using Gluster on SmartOS VMs? My research thus far leads me to believe I should be able to build the required packages on SmartOS. If someone knows otherwise, please let me know.

We would recommend against using GlusterFS for storage, even in an LX-branded zone.

BTW I'm more an end user rather than a developer.

Higher level question: What problem are you trying to solve, and how does Gluster fit the solution requirements? There may be other options that are worth considering.

In general, distributed file systems are very hard to get right. If you need a distributed file system for some part of your work, you need to chose carefully, and make implementation choices that specifically protect you. We've seen far too many implementations of "silver bullet" technologies in such a way that it (predictably) blows up at a later date.

Thanks.

Sam
