Forgot to mention, the receiving storage server is running Ubuntu 14.04. The zfs version on smartos and that on Ubuntu 14.04 seem compatible so I can easily zfs send/receive data sets back and forth between the systems.
I guess it's a sign of the times that we can zfs send data to an Ubuntu system, but not a Solaris one.....
