The funny thing is that, I hadn’t realized that Joyent was charging a premium
for the self-service portal.

Another thing that I’m not fond of with SDC is that the controller requires a
dedicated server, which can be a single point of failure.

(I do *think* that SDC is multi datacenter aware or Multi-SDC cluster aware,
which could be why this design was chosen, maybe someone at Joyent could chime
in on this. Back when I designed AppLogic grid implementations I always told
folks to setup multiple grids and not to just rely on one. Then architect your
apps such that it fell over between clusters in the event that 1 entire cluster
was down).

This is actually one of the reasons why I chose Fifo to begin with. The
controller can be clustered on as many machines as you’d like and it runs in
zones instead of on bare metal. Each node is independent.

Now I’m not really sure if I want to use SDC or just stick with Fifo.

SmartOS is definitely, IMO, the best bare metal OS/hypervisor out there, so I’m
going to stick with one of the SmartOS management platforms.

Currently I run 6 nodes CLI only. Fifo really is freaking great. The guy that
designed it is genius and he’s helpful if you jump on IRC or email him. (Heinz)

But, to answer your questions, yes, you’ll need to know some basic erlang.

Basic stuff like cookies, log reading, mDNS (not erlang), etc, etc.

If you don’t know a little bit, it can make small problems much larger.

I really wish that someone who really knew erlang and clustering well would
write up a comprehensive step by step guide to clustering too. (For LeoFS and
Fifo)

The Fifo documentation is pretty well written, but it is still lacking in the
clustering and troubleshooting departments.

Personally I think that Fifo could be where I stopped looking for a cloud
platform if there was some wider spread adoption and more people talking about
it out in the open source community. (forums, etc)

OpenStack IMHO is very flawed in its architecture and I’m not into its managing
authorities either so its far from an option for me.

Id say if you just need a gui for provisioning VMs that fifo is really fast and
easy to get up and running.

But if you try to build an HA clustered fifo deployment you better buy a book
on erlang and start reading.

Same goes for troubleshooting any fifo problems. Youll need to learn some
erlang.

You'll definitely want to remember that snapshots are your friend too. Ive
botched my share of fifo deployments and if you destroy it and start over with
existing running VMs its a ton of work to get your packages and networks
reconfigured.

Let me tell you, Erlang is not easy either. But fifo has a beautiful simple
interface and its great for provisioning VMs and zones.

Ive had my share of learning curves with LEosFS too.

SmartDC has many many more moving parts, but, it supports the latest versions
of SmartOS so youre not restricted to tested versions only.

If you need to analyze big data I say go with SmartDC so you can use Manta.

Im also getting ready to switch to smartdc and Im really looking for the built
in dtrace and the billing features that are built in.

Hope this helps!

Hi John,

I am also in the dilemma between FiFo and SDC and I was thinking of setting up
both of them and see which one suits better for our needs. First off, I should
say that we are a small software company in Greece and we need the cloud
infrastructure just (of about 10-15 hypervisors) for the services we're
providing, so we won't be offering VMs as a service.

I have just deployed a FiFo installation of 2 hypervisors and I'm trying to
learn how it works, and since I'm very new at this, I had no idea that in the
future I'd have to learn erlang for troubleshooting/administering FiFo. So, to
your experience, is erlang a prerequisite for FiFo?

Thanks for your info,

George.
