It sounds more like Samsung is already a big customer of Joyent and is making a strategic move to secure their access to Joyent's talent and infrastructure. Perhaps even exclusively, as far as licensing permits. I'd be surprised if this has anything to do with mobile beyond reducing Samsung's dependence on cloud providers who otherwise compete with Samsung in the mobile space. If they wanted Illumos on mobile, there are cheaper ways to have done that. Samsung has wide-ranging interests, though, including consumer cloud services and enterprise verticals, so I imagine this has more to do with other operations.
As an aside, by open-sourcing SDC in addition to SmartOS, Joyent at least helped ensure that the community wouldn't lose that or SmartOS in an acquisition. It would be wild to speculate on Joyent's foresight with respect to control over SmartOS and SDC IP, but I'm grateful they opened it up when they did, which is to say, while they could.
