A bunch of BIOSes have options to either attach SATA disks to the IDE or AHCI controllers. You likely have it set to the former. You can confirm by running prtconf -d and confirming what device driver the disks are showing up under. The error kstats you were looking at only show up for SCSI devices and in general should not be relied as they're not a public interface and can change at any time.
