Well, the question to go look into is how are the different tools and versions of software making different calls to the Linux kernel and then how is the Linux kernel using the virtual hardware differently. I would assume that other aspects of the system have changed between Debian 7 and 8, even if the high level of ext4 and extents hasn't.
