If you're looking to run gitlab under debian-8, you may want to consider using the LX image instead. I've run it under the LX CentOS image and it seemed to function reasonably well. Just make sure that the zone has some headroom between max_physical_memory and max_swap.
(Gitlab will size itself according to physical memory, but relies on the Linux over-commit behavior. Additional swap will help with that.)
