That's why I think there's a strong argument to be made for making the
default value of "canmount" be "noauto" for encrypted filesystems.

At which point, in my hypothetical future with the altered default someone
could explicitly set "canmount" to "on".

Out of curiosity, are you working with a ported version of the
https://github.com/zfsonlinux/zfs/pull/4329 code? Is your tree with patches
applied posted anywhere?
