Thanks. I created a zvol on the other pool and connected it up to the Windows
Server 2012 R2 vm.
Just for reference:

Next problem is how to create an internal network for use by the kvm vm's but
which has no internet access. I know its something that can be done in Hyper-V
and VMware.

Are you looking to add volume raw (not possible) or as a virtual disk?
If the latter, you can create the volume on another pool and just add it as a
disk in the machine's JSON with nocreate set true (if creating) or add it to an
existing machine.
