As it so happens Asus released a new motherboard bios today, which I
promptly updated. I can now actually see what is happening.  SmartOS gets
to the grub menu. Regardless of which of the 3 grub items I select, I end
up with the following error:
"*Error 28: selected item cannot fit into memory*"

FYI, my system has 64GB of Ram and a few terabytes of storage.
