I'm looking for anybody who has experience with multiport Serial to USB adapters under SmartOS. I'm attempting to locate a 16 port model that will work with stock SmartOS, and rather than iterating through every model on the market, I decided to ask here.
What model works? I can report that the Startech.com 16 port model attempts to come up, and it finds 4 of the 16 ports, with non-detection on 5 of the ports, and failure messages on the last 7, using the usbftdi driver. In my untrained eye, it appears that this device is effectively a chain of usb hubs with ftdi devices hanging off them. I have this environment right now, and can provide debugging if there's a desire. Similar devices with 8 or more ports would also be interesting to me. 16 ports exactly is not a requirement. I understand that this is probably a more generic Illumos question, however I'm specifically targeting a SmartOS platform for the rest of the work this computer is doing. I find evidence that Solaris had support for quite a few devices including the Edgeport series, but as per https://www.illumos.org/issues/36 that was a closed source driver.
