I have tried to get a vncserver compiled on SmartOS--there are none in the
Joyent pkgsrc repos. It's been a world of pain and I have not been
successful.

I've also tried building xrdp with xorgxrdp (
https://github.com/neutrinolabs/xrdp and
https://github.com/neutrinolabs/xorgxrdp) --I was successful building and
installing, but my RDP client disconnects after I enter my login
information. I traced that to Xorg returning something that xrdp doesn't
expect. I haven't had time to debug that more thoroughly. I'm concerned
it's a subtle difference in the way Illumos handles networking--I filed an
issue with the xorgxrdp repo but have had no response (
https://github.com/neutrinolabs/xorgxrdp/issues/91).

If you have a Mac you can install and start Xquartz and use

ssh -X your_smartos_host

and get the X information forwarded back to your machine. Then you can
start X clients on the SmartOS box and have them displayed directly on your
Mac.

There may be a much easier solution here, but my unfamiliarity with SmartOS
has me at a loss.

On a tangentially related note I also tried really really hard to get Xpra
to work, but I can't even make it work with my Mac and my Linux machines.
