Hi Karthik,

Some years ago, I ran SmartOS in parallel with a desktop operating system. I
had a large server with lots of unused RAM and CPU and wanted to harness that
for my desktop.

The best solution I found was to run VMware ESXi as a hypervisor, as ESXi
supports PCI passthrough. Then I installed SmartOS as one ESXi guest, and my
desktop OS as the other. I passed my NICs and LSI HBAs through to SmartOS, and
installed a desktop GPU and an additional NIC and passed them through to my
desktop OS.

It was a bit convoluted to set up, but worked perfectly, and I had extremely
good performance on both SmartOS and the desktop OS.

If you don’t need this kind of direct hardware access in SmartOS, it’s probably
easier to run your preferred desktop OS bare-metal and run SmartOS inside
VMware Workstation or similar.

Best,
Chris
