Hi Angelo,

Taking a step aside from your questions,

have you managed to gather crashdump for analysis? Usually generating NMI is 
the way to go in this sort of hang situation,
and per my check of /etc/system smartos kernel is configured to panic on 
sending NMI.

If we had one we could try to take a look at where was your machine frozen,
