32-bit kernels are still built when SmartOS is built, but it is not
included in the resulting platform image.

You could probably create your own platform image that works with with a
32-bit system by modifying the manifest in the root directory of the
illumos-joyent repository.  Keep in mind that you will be the only person
running this.  Being the only person is running something is often not a
good path to be on.  Having pain that is felt by many others is more likely
to lead to timely resolution of problems.
