Here's the patch that we're using in OE for over a year now:

looking at it, it does nothing but provide a configure option to use at _build_ time -- nothing i could not set in the source itself.
what value _is_ actually useful?

did anyone ever build a deb package with a timeout > 25000?
due to the mess, crosscompiling with debian can be, i am unable to build it myself -- either libtool produces buggy scripts or only amd64 code is build despite specifying armel at several locations ... (navit source deb otoh builds fine -- why does every package maintainer love to get his/her very own f* up way to create packages???)
