Hi there.  I am the GDM maintainer, so I'm probably a good person to
help you figure out the problem.

After you see the problem (with GDM failing to start and ending up
in maintenance mode), could you forward me the following file:

   /var/svc/log/application-gdm2-login:default.log

Any errors that GDM has with starting should be in the log.

Does running gdm-stop when you run "svcadm clear" make a difference?
It should ensure that the GDM daemons are truly fully stopped.  If
this fixes your problem, perhaps the svc manifest file should be
fixed so that the clear command runs gdm-stop?
