Sorry I didn't close the loop on this. Pkgmk whines, but does *not* fail if you don't include the parent directories for all objects in your package. That doesn't immediately help here, because existing packages will probably include the parent directories and so will probably do something wrong with the symlink, but it's still an interesting data point.
