Thank you, the debug option worked. I made sure the server got back the numbers which was what I was trying to do. I still don't understand very well why the web server user (www-data in Ubuntu) couldn't write to those directories. It was after I had changed the files owner and allowed them to be writeable by all, that the graph creation started.
Anyway I have changed the rights in the dirs and now it all works fine. Thank you for the help!
