In the about section of http://oss.oetiker.ch/smokeping/ it states that Extopus is "a frontend". Meaning that the frontend used in 2.6.x will still be around? I tried the demo at http://oss.oetiker.ch/extopus-demo/ep-admin.fcgi/app/# and, well, it felt a bit more WEB1.0. And I get more a WEB 1.5 feeling with the current frontend.
