Thank you for the replies. I have found out the proplem. It's actually minor... I was trying with the wrong comport which isn't on the computer. When I changed to a comport that is on the computer I just get a "no response from device" which is OK since I have no device connected.
But Thanasis, when I was working with an earlier version of smslib and I specify a comport that din't exist, I'd get a nice "com port does not exist " message. What happened to that? At least I din't end up on a wild goose chase :) . Thanks a lot for the library though, and I must say it's an excellent piece of work. And Njoroge, I am also from kenya. My name's Alex Ng'ang'a.
