These are NOT junk characters. They appear to be so if you switch your
modem to TEXT protocol. These junk chars are the message part
indicators (binary numbers).

Can you post (or send me) a *full* log of the ReadMessages example - I
need to see the data exchanged and to check where exactly smslib
hungs.
