While I was looking for something else I ran across this email.  It
was stats for an old test that I did.  It still applies.  The end
result being that anything better than 19.2 on the local interface
side it good enough.    38400 or 57600 is ideal because it allows the
app to clear and load the modem buffer or memory more efficiently.
115200 falls on the side of diminishing returns.

282 messages in 1454 seconds
= 5.1 seconds per message
= 11.6 messages per minute
= 101 characters per message = 19.8 cps
average processor utilization while sending was 5%  only 1% was the
JRE
average memory usage was 23.6 MB  ... and has not grown.  No memory
leaks.
The carrier was T-Mobile USA using a single modem.
The modem was the Multitech GPRS Ethernet connected variety.
