Hi Malcolm One thing to try would be to back up your address book (file > export > address book archive) then delete all the contacts and see if the iPhone will sync then. If it does, restore your address book from the backup and re-sync.
Have you tried restoring the iPhone to factory settings within iTunes then restoring from your last backup?
