the default setting for a VM harddisk is to dynamically expand up to the 
maximum value set during the creation of the VM rather then preallocate 
the that maximum size to the VM harddisk.
Unfortunately the dynamic sizing does work downwards (where if you 
delete files from the harddisk of the VM the size of the disk will shrink).
What you need to do is open vmware tools (on your system tray (next to 
the clock))
goto the shrink tab
select the drive to shrink
& hit the Prepare to shrink button
vmware will do it's thing in windows, then OS X will pop up with a 
confirmation window to shrink the disk.
