I have been having problems with duplicates on iCal. After posting a query about this, Ranulph told me he had the same problem and had solved it using mobile.me. This didn't help me as I don't use mobile.me, so I went to see a Genius at the Apple Store today. (Brilliant new system, you can book an apt on line). Various points came out of this which I will list as someone else may have the same problem : 1) duplications tend to occur if syncing with a Palm handheld. There is a free prog (iCal dupe deleter) which deletes duplicates in each calendar. This was not much use to me as my duplicates are between calendars. 3) To delete duplicated calendars ( ie 2 birthdays, 2 personal etc) export each duplicate to desktop and then drag it back to the calendar you want it joined to. Then delete it from desktop. All of this has worked fine for me and now I have just 3 calendars (birthdays, London, Sussex) each a different colour and no duplicates of calendars or entries.
