either

1) my new MB has a weird fault that kills Minidisplayport
adaptors (to VGA) Or:

2) waking from deep sleep (hibernation) with the power not
plugged in, a USB cable attached and the aforementioned
MiniDisplayport adaptor plugged into a live monitor...kills the
adaptors. It's just happened for the second time in a couple of months.

Every fortnight I do a longish trip with my laptop returning
Monday evening. I'm pretty sure the last time it failed was also
in those circumstances (which has just happened.) I got the last
one replaced at the Apple store Regent St (but had to be really
pushy to get it done, they wanted me to send it in for repair
(or something -- I don't remember exactly) and I asked for the
manager as this was rubbish because I had only had it for a very
short time, and he smiled and said 'ok' and got me a
replacement. It's apparently policy to try to put people off,
which stinks. But I've never taken much notice of policies and
insist that 'this should be sorted out now'. It's amazing what
happens when you just refuse to hear their saying that 'there's
nothing I can do'. Keep asking for the manager untll someone
decides its easier to get rid of you).

so I have to do it again on Wedensday and I don't plan to see if
I can cause it to happen again:-)

But I thought I would post a note just in case anyone else has a
similar set-up. I don't know if it's 'normal' sleep or only
hibernation that does it, but from now on I will power up the
machine before plugging in the adaptor.

I tried running the recent firmware update but it doesn't see
the adaptor at all.
