My TC appears on my desktop when it is actually backing up every hour,
following which it un-mounts again.

However, I can always find it in the side bar of any finder window under
"Shared", if it doesn't show - go to the Finder and open "Preferences" in
the Finder menu - select 'Sidebar' and tick everything (or be more selective
if you chose).

Now in a Finder Window sidebar select your TC and open the icons there until
you see the Backup files (ending in .sparesebundle).

That's as far as I can take you - I am not going to attempt to delete one of
my backups in case it works.
