Well, it has worked fine when I've tried it at home between my iMac and iBook. However, the thing that makes it useless for me really is that I would have to leave my iMac up and running all day just on the odd chance that I may want to access it - I couldn't countenance such a waste of energy so it's a no-no for me. However, in an office where a Mac would often be on all day then I suppose it could be very useful.
