You mentioned fingernail, if you use your fingernails to type on the  
iPhone it's not going to work at all. It's not pressure sensitive,  
it's electro-sensitive so it responds to the electrical capacitance of  
your skin.

The keyboard actually does some very clever things while you're  
typing. It recognises first any keys you've tapped and their adjacent  
keys, it will build possible words out of not only the keys you've  
tapped but also the keys you could've tapped had you made a mistake.  
Using this list it will guess the next character you're about to tap,  
then make the invisible 'hit' area of that key bigger, so you could  
miss but still tap the right key.
