The battery in my iBook is now quite useless through age. It doesn't hold
the power for very long at all and I have to use it mains only. I now have
an iMac so don't use the lap top very often. When I try to use it I have the
same problem. However if I leave it plugged in for 5 or 10 minutes, the
mains does get through and gives enough power for the Mac to start up.
Perhaps you could try leaving it plugged in for a while and then press the
start up button?
