Hi Sam,

I have just tried inserting the original DVD again, holding down the
Alt key and waiting. Eventually the option to start on the DVD comes
up although it then locked up before I had the chance to go further. I
guess all this adds up to a failed drive - it is taking a long time to
work out that the main drive has failed before it throws up the DVD as
the only option. Fortunately I do not keep any files on here that are
not backed up so the contents are largely unimportant - on that basis
I guess buying and fitting a new drive and starting again is my
straightforward option. Funnily enough I took delivery of a MacBook
Air yesterday afternoon and was planning to give this machine to a
colleague in Brighton - if I didn't know better I would say that the
old MacBook is sulking!
