I would say unplag the electricity of your wireless modem and plug-it back again. Also restart your Mac. This has worked for me many times, in terms of speed issues.
Netgear modems are actually very stable (at least they have been for me in the past) - however there is always the Airport Extreme or Time Capsule options.
