Hi Phil

You can do a full time machine backup to an external drive, then
install the OS fresh onto your new drive after installation, then part
of the first startup is the migration assistant where it'll pull
everything back in. There are a few low level system changes that it
can miss such as virtual host configuration or other modified apache
settings but if that won't affect you then time machine's the easiest
way.

You'll need two rubber suckers to lift up the glass screen, don't use
anything to pry it as you'll chip the glass or bend off the pins that
keep it in place. It's held on magnetically so is easy to remove with
the right tools
